The #1 cell fuel for human beings and all living things is oxygen. We can’t go longer than a few minutes without breathing, neither can our cells. The challenge comes when our cells become deprived of oxygen and our modern environment is a contributing factor to this for a number of reasons. An obvious reason is sedentary lives. Our bodies are designed to move and be physically active. It does not require excessive working out and hours on a treadmill – it requires being active in a variety of different ways we can optimise every part of the body.
As odd as this may sound, you’re probably not breathing enough. Most people are not breathing effectively. This is largely down to our sednetary lives, or certainly sedentary compared with how our ancestors would move. Our bodies are designed to move, and we’re meant to use our full lung capacity, not just the first third section of our lungs – that most of us are using.

You don’t have to be active all the time to breathe effectively. You can do conscious breathing, breathwork, meditation – anything that gets you out of an unconcious shallow breath. Try setting your alarm every hour and taking a few minutes out to breathe using your diaphragm. It can make a world of difference to your concentration and your psychology.
